Figure 8 Jump Hooks

The cones on this diagram represent chairs. A basketball is placed on each chair. The player starts underneath the basket and moves in a figure 8 movement around the chairs, moving outside the chair over the top.

When the player reaches the top of the chair he picks up the basketball in a good low post position. He then explodes up (with no dribble) and executes a jump hook over the front of the rim. He then proceeds underneath the next chair and over the top in a figure 8 movement. This movement will allow him to work on both right and left jump hooks in front of the rim.

After the player makes 10 jump hooks, the next player steps in and starts the drill.

A coach or next player (s) will rebound and put the ball back on the chair.

Teaching points: Player must remain low and bend at the knees (not the waist) to pick up the basketball. Player must execute the jump hook with his inside shoulder closest to the basket and his outside shoulder away from the basket, protecting the ball. Do not have him square both shoulders to the basket (this will allow the defense to block the shot).
