Half Moon Post Drill

Michigan State likes this drill. Post players out of bounds to start. They pass the ball out to coach (optional) and then post up on the block. Once they reach the block they must be in a good, low post up position. Once at the block they begin what is called a "half-moon" move. They will slide from side to side (simulating a half-moon) as if they are trying to keep the defender on their back. Good, quick footwork is a must.

Have them half-moon three or four times and then make the entry pass.

I have them work on one of four post moves once catching the ball:

1) drop step and power-layup.
2) turn around jump shot.
3) fake the turn around jump shot and step through to the basket (also known as an up and under move or Kevin Mchale).
4) Double drop step move. Have the player take a dribble in one direction as if to be setting up a shot in that direction, then take one more dribble while drop stepping in the opposite direction towards the basket for the power lay-up. Can be run both to the middle and to the baseline.
