UCLA "Down" Set Play vs. Man

1 - 4 high set to begin. America's Play with some additions.

You want to be able to have a set play that will create a scoring opportunity for your two best scorers in one possession, especially when it is crunch time and you need to get the ball in the hands of your scorers. This play enables our team to accomplish that goal.

#1 dribbles at your best perimeter shooter, #2. #2 moves down to the ball side low block. #3 is your best post player and starts his movement down to the opposite low block.

#2 screens across for #3. #1's first look is to #3 posting up on the right low block.

If #3 is not open, #2 cuts "between" #4 and #5 who are moving down to set a double down screen for #2. As soon as #2 cuts through the middle of the double screen, #4 and #5 "close the door" and move together, not allowing the trailing defender to get through the screen.

If you feel this is not effective for you, you can have #4 and #5 screen down together and #2 can cut to the outside of the double screen.

It has been my experience that #2's defender will be trailing #2 a bit because of the screening action for #3 in the post. #2's defender will usually open and help for a moment before recovering to #2.

If #2 does not have a shot, you could just run your motion offense from there. However, if #3 is somewhat of a good outside shooter in addition to being a good post player, the play can continue.

#3 comes off the double screen while #2 takes the ball toward the left wing. If #3 is open he receives the ball for the shot.

If #3 is not open, as #3 came off the double screen, #5 is pinching down and #4 is cutting over the top into the lane looking for the post entry pass from #2, who has picked up his dribble and has made an outside pivot with the ball.

As #2 pivots, #1 is now cutting towards the ball. Since #2 has lost his dribble, #1's defender will tighten up, thinking he may have a steal. #1 then cuts to the basket for the back door layup.
