Dan,
I could not agree with you more. Although the dribble can be effective tool in any offense (especially attacking dribbles that are at the basket or a gap in the defense), often times players use wasted dribbles when they are going nowhere and only increasing the chance for a turnover. Additionally, the other 4 players will tend to stand around more when the ball is being dribbled.
I like to use a 50 pressure passing contest from time to time in my pratices. First team to get to 50 passes wins. You can run it once with the dribble and then run it without the dribble (or perhaps limit the dribbles to 1 or 2 per person).
I award the team 3 points for scoring (added to their pass total). If they score they keep the ball and continue from the score they achieved until they get to 50 total passes.
This drill will encourage movement without the ball and screening in your offense. Hopefully, it will also teach them to handle the basketball under tough defensive conditions, as the defenders only way of scoring in this game is to get the ball back and start their own 50 pass count.
Great point Dan! Thanks for your post!
