This is a difficult subject. I know on the surface it sounds great that you want to reward effort in practice. I have tried this concept as well and here is the problem I ran into. The same person kept winning the award! So, what happens after awhile is that you start giving the award to other players just because you want to acknowledge someone else. So, the person who deserves it becomes alienated and the award starts to diminish in value. No easy way around this one, you just have to be firm and fair in your decision each week and be prepared to give out multiple awards to the same person, often week after week. The problem is someone might really be busting their tail and then when someone else gets the award, again you will have some let down by the person who worked hard and didn't get it. These are all problems associated with giving awards, especially weekly awards. Wish I had a workaround for this one, but I really don't. Just warning you what comes with this territory. I have used at many coaching stops, a "hustle board". Sure it would be great if you could afford an electronic board like the NBA arenas, but I use the same thing in our time-outs. We chart the hustles categories as you mentioned - rebounds, loose balls, charges, points in transition (for both teams). We have a nice form with each category side by side under our team and our opponent and we fill in the numbers large and clear for them to glance at each time-out. Great reminder of their effort in the game. Much easier to show them that they are getting outworked instead of just yelling "you're getting outworked!" Nothing like clear and concise stats to drive your point home. I wish you well with this motivational endeavor.
