Set Play vs. Zone Defense

Against a zone defense (2-1-2 or 2-3) (#1) has the ball at the top. (#1) will fake the ball to (#2) as (#4) is flashing to the foul line to give him a passing angle into the middle. The pass comes from (#1) into (#4) at the foul line. On the pass, (#3) slides down toward the corner.

Set Play vs. Zone Defense

As the defense reacts to the pass to the middle, (#3) again slides down into the corner. (#4) will pass the ball to (#3) in the corner and post up hard at the elbow or even mid / high post area asking hard for the ball (decoy) to bring the middle defender up on him. (#1) will then roam to the wing after he passes to (#4) in the middle. (#2) then slides down a little bit as (#4) has the ball.

Set Play vs. Zone Defense

(#5) crosses along the baseline and sets a solid pick for (#2) coming from the weak side. The pass to the middle will occupy the middle defender and the quick pass from (#4) to (#3) to the corner will have to occupy the bottom defender on the ball side, otherwise (#3) has a 3-point shot. A solid pick from (#5) will leave (#2) with an easy lay-up or a short jumper. (#1) must fill in the ball side wing because if the middle defender slides down to the block to defend the pass to (#2), then the top defender on the ball side will have to defend both (#4) and (#1). With options to (#2), then (#4) and (#1) if (#2) ends up covered...you should get a good shot off.

The Keys to this play are:

1) A quick pass from (#4) to (#3) breaking to the corner.

2) (#5) and (#2) must time their pick and it should be quick, but (#2) must be patient and wait for (#5's) pick.

3) (#4) must work hard in the mid / high post asking for the ball to occupy the middle defender.
