Drill Time

Back in one of our first issues of Chicken Soop for the Coach, we provided you with a UCLA Practice Plan. In that plan, a series of drills were mentioned called the "Peer Pressure" Drills. We would run these series of drills just about everyday in practice, usually around the beginning.

I will provide you with breakdown diagrams and explanations for each of the (5) series of drills that make up the Peer Pressure Series. We really have (7) series of drills because Peer Pressure 1 and 2 are executed first with the left hand and then the right hand, making it two series in one.

These drills emphasize passing and catching a high speeds, conditioning, cutting, jumpstops, layups at high speeds, as well as concentration and mental toughness. Our top assistant at the time, Jim Saia, brought these drills with him from Gary Colson at Fresno State (who got them from Ralph Miller), as well as the 1 - 4 high offense that we had much success with at UCLA. (And, as a matter of fact, the same top selling offense that is for sale in our coaches store at 50% off the price of what you will find anywhere).

Here they are:

Peer Pressure (1)

Peer Pressure (2)

Peer Pressure (3)

Peer Pressure (4)

Peer Pressure (5)

We would run these drills in succession. It would take us about 20 to 30 minutes to get through them all, possibly longer if we continued to have mental lapses and missed layups, bad passes, etc. I believe these drills were a great benefit to our program. We were fired after (7) years at UCLA, so please take that into consideration before using these drills!!! (no, I'm not bitter!)
